Twenty Molson Coors employees took part in the gruelling Three Peaks trekking challenge at the end of May, raising an incredible amount of money for a vital national charity.
The group set off from Burton in the early hours of Sunday 31 May – driven by volunteers who kindly gave up their time – before battling through cold weather, rain, wind, low visibility and even snow to complete the combined 10,000-plus foot ascent across the three highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon).
Nancy Criddle, who works in Coors’ commercial sales team and completed the challenge in 23 hours and 24 minutes (!), told the Echo that “the conditions were really quite gruelling, especially on Scafell and Snowdon.
It made it physically harder, but I do think it was more of a mental challenge for me. Being able to motivate yourself, with no sleep, to go back out there and climb a third mountain in wet clothes and horrible weather was really tough.
Tom Whittle, who works in finance, agreed that “the weather was awful”, adding: “My legs filed a formal complaint somewhere around Scafell Pike!”
But the amount the team raised surely made it all worthwhile – an amazing £17,000 (and still rising!) for CALM, The Campaign Against Living Miserably.
This charity, founded 20 years ago in March, works to prevent suicide across the UK, by providing life-saving services and practical mental health support to anyone who needs it.
The money raised – well over the combined target of £12,000 – will go towards CALM’s services, helping the charity provide assistance to those in crisis.
Nancy said that “knowing we were all doing it together for a really great cause got me through, and it was definitely worth it in the end”.
And Tom, who came away from the challenge with “one bruised ego and a newfound respect for anyone who does this, or anything tougher, for fun,” added that “honestly, I’d recommend anyone give it a shot!”
