These groups, which carry out vital work for the community, will benefit from events and fundraising initiatives.
Councillor Monica Holton, the recently-elected 34th mayor of East Staffordshire, has picked four ‘chosen charities’ to champion over her year-long term, all of which are very much in keeping with her many years of work in the voluntary sector, especially surrounding crisis prevention and support.
Monica said she was “honoured to take on the role of mayor, and humbled by the opportunity to further serve all communities in East Staffordshire”.
Her chosen charities, which will benefit from civic events and fundraising initiatives, are:
- Burton and District YMCA, which works tirelessly to support those who are homeless,
- Street Whyze, founded in 2021 to raise awareness and take action against knife crime and youth violence in the area,
- Mother Wilkin Centre for Senior Support, which provides essential care and companionship to elderly residents in and around the town, and
- New Era – Domestic Abuse Victims Support, a holistic domestic abuse service for residents of all ages and genders.
These vital community organisations have expressed their delighted about being chosen to work with Mayor Holton.
The Mother Wilkin Centre said “we look forward to working along with you and we wish you much success in your year as mayor”.
New Era added about its own selection that “we are sure those affected by domestic abuse will also appreciate this support”.
Monica has also chosen the honourable Reverend Pam Thompson as her chaplain for the year, and says she is “blessed to have you by my side in prayer and to guide me spiritually”.
