The exclusive BAT beers are especially proving a huge hit.

With more venues than ever before and an earlier kick-off time, the ninth Burton Ale Trail got off to a flying start yesterday.
Across the trail, pubs reported packed bars, fast-moving beer and a cracking atmosphere as trail-goers wasted no time getting their first pint on the scoresheet.
“It was the busiest Thursday we’ve experienced,” said Loz from The Elms. “Our Cheese & Marmite straws and Campfire Sticks were flying out. We’ve changed the Bass three times already and there’s plenty more waiting in the cellar.”
The exclusive BAT beers are proving a huge hit. At The Devonshire Arms, a firkin of Devonshire Pale Ale had completed a hat-trick of popularity and disappeared by teatime, while over at The Coopers, there was a surprise result.
“For once, Bass wasn’t our top seller,” laughed landlady Cheryl. “It’s been all about Joules, especially the special brew Compass.”
Even the weather tried to play its part. One determined couple left Burton Bridge Inn declaring they had a trail to conquer, only to make an immediate substitution and return moments later when the heavens opened.
“I forgot to bring the parasols in and one took off across the car park,” said Cheryl. “I had to go chasing after it in the Apne car park. Fortunately there were no cars around!”
At Inn-Uendo’s, Richard was forced into an early kick-off as eager trail-goers were already rattling the door before opening time. His exclusive beer, Stiff Defence, has made an immediate impact.
“The feedback has been excellent,” he said. “Lots of people have told us they’ll be back on Saturday, which is encouraging.”
The new venues have certainly hit the ground running.
“We were far busier than normal,” said Dave Hughes from Burton Tennis & Squash Club. “The lads from Ayrshire called in and everyone was complimentary about the quality and condition of the ales. Many stayed for more than one pint and the club was absolutely buzzing.”
Luke from The Waterloo was equally enthusiastic.
“Absolutely fabulous. It was brilliant to see so many new faces. Together with Burton Tennis & Squash Club, we’re making the start of people’s Burton Ale Trail the best it can be.”
If you’re taking part, don’t forget to visit to check the fixtures, study the form guide, browse beer lists, vote in the Best Beer on the BAT competition and leave feedback for the pubs.
With two (and a bit!) more days still to play, we’re only in the opening minutes of this year’s Burton Ale Trail and there are plenty more thrills to come.
