Fast uptake at Tyldesley Court has demonstrated the need for homes for people aged over 55.
Burton-based social housing landlord Trent & Dove officially opened its Tyldesley Court development in the heart of the town in May.
Tackling the affordable housing shortage, Tyldesley Court comprises 72 high-quality one and two-bed homes for the over-55s and 10 three-bed family homes, and creates a thriving community alongside nine general-needs apartments, all for rent.
The site is rooted in rich Burton history. A brewery flourished on the site, later redeveloped as Bargates Shopping Centre – the home of Superbowl 2000 – which was demolished in 2010 and left empty.

Homes England has supported the scheme with a £6.6 million grant funding via Trent & Dove’s strategic partnership with housing group Orbit.
During the ceremony on 6 May, a plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of East Staffordshire, Kim Smith BEM.
Stakeholders and local councillors were given an internal tour of Tyldesley Court to see firsthand the impact the development has had on its residents.
Tyldesley Court demonstrates the need for homes for people aged over 55, as all apartments have been let.
As extra support for customers, pull cords are fitted in all apartments, and a portable call unit with 24/7 links to a warden call provider is also installed. All doors use a fob entry system, and video access is available to enable customers to see their visitors before granting access.
Breathing new life into the area and providing spectacular views across the River Trent, Tyldesley Court has been built by developer Morro Partnerships and has strengthened ties between Trent & Dove, BPN Architects, property and construction consultancy Gleeds and Stanbridge Interiors.

Developments like this are crucial as the demand for high-quality, affordable homes for people over 55 continues to grow. Providing the right homes at the right time not only supports residents to live independently for longer, it also helps free up family housing and strengthens the wider housing market.
The scheme supported the local economy by using local suppliers. Apprenticeship opportunities for local people and links with local schools were also created as part of the development.
And members of the public were given the opportunity to choose designs for the kitchens and communal lounges as part of a Founders’ Group.
The development was named after Sir Thomas Tyldesley, an English Civil War general who led a charge across the nearby Burton Bridge in 1643. Tyldesley crossed the bridge of 36 arches while under constant fire and later received a knighthood, and was made a brigadier by King Charles I at Greenwich.
