East Staffordshire Borough Council introduces new housing allocations policy

The new policy has been designed to ensure that social housing is allocated fairly.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has approved a new Housing Allocations Policy which will come into effect later this year.

The new policy has been designed to ensure that social housing is allocated fairly, transparently and in line with local housing needs.

As part of the transition to the new arrangements, all households currently registered on the Housing Register will be contacted regarding the new policy and invited to provide up-to-date information about their housing circumstances through a new registration process that reflects the policy.

The Council will also be bringing management of the Housing Register back in-house, enabling a locally focused service for residents.

Housing applicants will receive direct communication explaining what they need to do, when they need to do it and the support available to help them complete the re-registration process. There is no need for anyone on the current register to reapply until later in the year, when they are contacted about it.

The existing Housing Register will remain in place during the transition period.

Councillor Simon Slater, Cabinet Member for Communities and Regulatory Services, said: “These changes represent an important step in making sure social housing is allocated to those who need it most. We are committed to creating a system that is easy to understand, fair for applicants and focused on the needs of East Staffordshire residents. As we move to the new arrangements, we will be providing support throughout the re-registration process to help people update their information in line with the new policy.”

Further information, including frequently asked questions and support arrangements, will be published on the Council’s website.
