Earlier this year we visited the RSPCA Burton branch, tucked away just off Hillfield Lane in Stretton.
We were struck by the passion, warmth and dedication of the team and by just how few people realised it was there at all. However, with no regular funding from the national charity, the Burton branch was reaching a financial crisis point and was at serious risk of closure, leaving countless animals without care, shelter or support.
The small, independent centre has a big job to do. While the branch works closely with the national RSPCA on policy, it is entirely self-funded. The team here cares for cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs – from animals looking for forever homes to ‘case animals’ temporarily boarding while national investigations are ongoing.
Led by Centre Manager, Lesley and Branch Administrator Jo, the staff and volunteers are the heart and soul of the place. Whether it’s Paul, the Small Animal Supervisor sharing his expert rabbit knowledge, or Kieran making the leap from pharmaceuticals to animal care, everyone at the centre plays their part.
This year the branch launched its biggest ever fundraiser: the ‘Save Our Animal Home Appeal’, an urgent and ongoing campaign to help secure the future of the centre. The appeal struck a chord with the local community.
It has raised over £20,000 to date, mostly through JustGiving with donations still coming in. It is a clear sign of how much people care about the work being done at the centre — and every pound raised brings vital help to animals in need.
Among the most touching contributions was a legacy gift from Carol Ramsell, a lifelong animal lover and former volunteer dog walker at the centre. Carol sadly passed away not long ago, but left just over £100,000 in her will to the branch — a hugely generous gesture that Jo described as life-changing. With monthly running costs at around £30,000, Carol’s gift alone covers roughly three months of operations.
Altogether, thanks to the legacy, the appeal, and other local fundraising efforts, the branch now has approximately six months of running costs in the bank — giving the team a little more time and space to plan for the future.
To honour Carol’s kindness, volunteer Sam Legg is creating a memorial garden at the centre — a peaceful space to reflect and remember. The garden will be formally dedicated to Carol, with the support of Kim Geering, the executor of her will.
While challenges remain, the RSPCA Burton branch continues its vital work caring for vulnerable animals from across the area. Their next major event, the Autumn Fair, takes place on Saturday 7th September (11am – 3pm) at the centre. It’s a great opportunity to meet the team, learn more about the branch, and show your support.
