Burton & District Mind celebrates 35 years of supporting local mental health

Burton & District Mind is marking a major milestone this year as it celebrates 35 years of supporting people with their mental health across Burton and the surrounding area

Since being established in 1991, the charity has grown from a small organisation supporting people experiencing mental health challenges into a well-established local charity that now helps around 4,000 people every year. Today, Burton & District Mind is made up of a number of specialist teams, combining professional qualifications with lived experience to deliver a wide range of mental health services tailored to the needs of the local community.

Among the support available are engaging activity projects, counselling and coaching services, the Safe Haven Crisis Café, which is open seven days a week throughout the year, the Future Focus programme, which helps people make positive changes in their lives, and signposting to vital mental health information and support. To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the charity is inviting the community to get involved in a unique fundraising challenge – a 35-hour Gymathon.

The event will see members of the Burton & District Mind team taking part in 35 consecutive hours of gym-based activities, with at least one participant exercising during every hour of the challenge. Money raised will help match-fund Mind Makeover Workshops, pastoral support and other local mental health projects, ensuring the charity can continue providing vital services to those who need them most.

The charity is encouraging individuals, community groups, businesses and gyms to take part, with fancy dress warmly welcomed. Volunteers are also needed to act as marshals throughout the event, helping to keep participants safe, motivated and hydrated.
Anyone interested in taking part or volunteering is invited to contact fundraising@burtonmind.co.uk.
