New coffee shop, SCOFFI, now open on Station Street

Owner Ruma says that “getting to this point definitely didn’t happen overnight”.

Station Street is more and more becoming Burton’s place to be. It is especially good to see that there is some interest in the old units on the right, just before the station itself.

One of these – number 118, right next to Henry’s Records – recently became the home of SCOFFI, Burton’s newest coffee shop.

SCOFFI started out in May 2024 as a local food trailer business, before owner Ruma Waterworth opened its “new chapter”. But some things remain the same – not least, the good offering of tasty, healthy food (I’d say the topped sourdoughs are certainly worth trying) and wide range of hot and cold drinks.

Perhaps more than this, the coffee shop, which officially opened on Monday 1 June, sells itself on its modern, yet still welcoming look and feel. And, of course, its friendly staff!

And that’s not by accident. Ruma told the Echo that she wanted the coffee shop to be “more than just somewhere to grab a coffee. I wanted it to feel welcoming, cosy, relaxed and somewhere people genuinely enjoy spending time – whether that’s before work, during lunch or when catching up with friends.”

Ruma describes SCOFFI as “a lifelong dream”, adding that “getting to this point definitely didn’t happen overnight”.

It’s taken months of hard work, stress, laughter, cries, long days and plenty of determination to bring it to life.

The shop itself has been created largely by my own hands – from tiling, painting, upcycling unwanted furniture, styling the interior and carefully choosing every little detail. I’ve always loved reclaimed and characterful pieces, so creating a space that felt unique, warm and full of my personality was really important to me.

To now see people sitting in the space I’ve created, enjoying it and coming back again, already honestly makes all the hard work worth it.

Open from 7.30am-3pm on weekdays (and 9am-2pm on Saturdays. Closed Sundays), SCOFFI should be especially appealing for those who get the train to work. It is even home to a genuine live departure board, which I realised was real when the next train for Nottingham read “CANCELLED” – so customers know exactly when they need to make the short walk up the hill.

Other quirks include a turntable and a selection of records. This fits nicely with what Ruma tells us are her future plans for some live acoustic sessions.

That is, once everything has settled down! After enjoying seeing passersby peek through the windows ahead of opening, Ruma says she is “incredibly grateful to everyone who’s supported the journey so far”, while admitting that the first week was “amazing and stressful all in one! But in the best way possible.

What’s been really lovely is seeing people come back already and bring friends and family with them because they’ve enjoyed the vibe so much and love the space I’ve created. As a new business, that’s probably the biggest compliment ever!

It means the world as a local Burton girl who just took the risk and followed her dream.

Hopefully that gives someone else the inspiration to follow their dreams too!
